1. It’s a process
When going blonde, it doesn’t happen overnight. It actually takes a few sessions depending where you’re starting (the level of your hair naturally, what previous color has been done to your hair, etc). It’s definitely something you need to be patient with and take one step at a time.
2. Consider the maintenance
Depending what kind of technique/look you’re going for, the maintenance can be quite frequent. If you’re looking for highlights or all over blonde, you should be getting it touched up every 4-6 weeks. If you go for more of a hand painted/balayage look, you’re looking at more of a 6-8 weeks.
3. Be honest with your hairstylist
This is the MOST important part when chatting with your stylist. Be sure to answer their questions as truthfully as possible. When lightening hair and creating a formula, it is taken to account whether your hair has been previously colored, colored unprofessionally, what your natural hair color is, the products you use, etc. So if you want to get the best outcome you can, be totally honest and transparent with your stylist.
4. Products, products, products
What you use when you leave the salon, is just as important as the service itself. If you aren’t using the right products that are PROFESSIONAL, you’re putting your hair at risk to break off and decolorize. When going blonde, purple shampoo is key! It’s used to keep your blonde bright and icy. The purple will cancel out the yellow tones your hair will start to show once your toner fades. Treatments are also soooo important. Getting them before, after and at home. They will help put protein and moisture into your hair and keep the integrity is good as possible.
5. Prepare to INVEST in your hair
Going blonde is not cheap. You get what you pay for! So look into your stylist, check out their work and chat with them. Going blonde will take a few appointments so make sure to really talk beauty budget with your stylist so you aren’t sticker shocked at the end of your appointments.
6. Hydration is key
Keeping your hair hydrated and well taken care of between appointments is so important. If you aren’t avoiding excessive heat or protecting your hair with heat protectant, your hair could break off. Your cuticle is so sensitive when your hair is lightened, you need to take care of it!
